The political situation in Sweden

By Agneta Norberg is a longtime Swedish Peace Activist and In the Advisory Board of Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.

I remember the  time during  the former Cold War from the early fifties  till the wall fell in 1989.. The propaganda in Sweden towards the Soviet Union was sometimes harsh  but not the way it is today .Many Swedish tourists visited Soviet Union and so did even  I many times.

Today we are in the Cold War  number two  and the climate has changed . Now the propaganda machine uses the  television´s many channels, daily and weekly magazines and newspapers are used to drown us all in Russofobia.  Additionally Sweden has  today a rightwing government which uses their power  to get even more money for defence and Sweden has applied for NATO membership.

Today  we have Facebook as an informant which "informs" the viewers  in  lies and  nonsense about our great Russia. The reason is ..we have to give more money to the defence.

I have been one of the outspoken persons against this nonsense. I wrote on Facebook in early  spring  2022, the following: "I do hope the Russians  will stay in Ukraine till they have thrown out the Nazis". This sentence was read  by the editor  in  the ultraliberal  newspaper  Expressen, and they put it up as big news. It didn´t last long until Swedish Women´s Left organisation and The Left in the Swedish Church threw me out from their organisations without any explanations. These two  left organisations sent a mail which told me   I was excluded. No explanations why. Later on one  of Sweden´s more prestigious newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet, had an op ed in July where the editor  condemned   my pro-Russian posture.

In  June 2nd 2023 I was invited to speak at a peace conference  in Jokkmokk, a municipality in the high North of Sweden. I was invited to talk about the Space arms race and about NATO. On  April 28th the organiser infomed me I was not allowed to speak at the conference. The reasons were that two funding organisations  threatened to withdraw  their economical support if I was allowed to speak. The organiser obeyed and told me I was not wellcome to Jokkmokk.. I was of course furious for this treatment. I told about it to as many as I could and received a lot of support.  One shining example was  Bruce Gagnon from Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and Dave Webb in the same organisation wrote sharp letters to the organisers.

Women for Peace and the Swedish Peace Committée expressed their frustration and anger and gave me support. It didn´t stop there. On June 9th this year Women for Peace office was visited by a representative for the funding organisation  to Women for Peace. He questioned that Agneta Norberg was one of the members of Women for  Peace because "she holds extreme views on many things".

He gave an example that I had uttered something negative about Sweden´s Minister of Foreign Affairs. On June 13, 2023,  Women for Peace board, had a crisis meeting about me.

They contacted and informed me they didn´t want to ask me to leave the organisation  a demand I would have rejected. They  asked me to step down from a minor  Working Group which I belonged to. I accepted that.

Hopefully the power is satisfied with that.
